The Food Working Group held its first meeting Monday, March 19, 2012, at Mulligan Books and Seeds, with seven people attending. Based on the interests expressed, the name is being changed to Food and Seed Working Group. The first event is a seed exchange at the Ukiah Farmers Market, Saturday, April 21, 9:30 am to noon, to honor Earth Day. Bring your seeds in labeled envelopes and exchange them for other flower, herb, vegetable, or native plant seeds. If you can’t be there, please drop your labeled seeds off at Mulligan Books and Seeds, 208 South State Street, Ukiah.
Other interests being explored are share gardening, a seed bank, seed saving and gathering, growing farmers markets, marketing local produce, food preservation, food education, chickens, gleaning, and de-lawning. The Food and Seed Working Group would love to collaborate with Community Gardens, The Gardens Project of NCO, the Farmers Market, local farmers including CSAs, the Food Policy Council, Mendo Free Skool, Garden Clubs, churches, Plowshares, the Food Bank, the Ukiah Food Coop, area schools, and anyone else helping to build a resilient, local food system.
The next meeting is Monday, April 2, 6 pm, at Mulligan Books and Seeds. For more information, contact Peggy Backup.
